Scoliosis and Spinal Fracture Pelvic Girdles and Body Jackets:
Scoliosis:
- For optimal performance, start bracing early (>25 and progressive) and reduce the curves and maintain curve reduction (> 50%) throughout the duration of wear.
- The primary role of a brace for idiopathic scoliosis is to arrest curve progression and yield a post bracing curve that is of a magnitude that will not progress as an adult.
- Since bracing is the only accepted conservative treatment for idiopathic scoliosis, it must be done meticulously. Followup adjustments must be done in a prompt manner.
- We commonly fit patients with a Charleston or Providence brace, which is worn at night, allowing the patient to assume normal daily activities.

Spinal Fracture:
- Orthoses typically must substitute for or assist the musculature around the spine. In acute settings, immediate spinal column protection is essential.
- If a particular movement or position is painful, orthoses, in particular cervical collars, remind the patient to not move and, therefore, aid in limiting motion.
